What is Metaverse? Will it soon become a trend?

Facebook has recently announced the creation of a team dedicated to realizing CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s ambitious vision: the Metaverse project. Said Zuckerberg: “Our overarching goal across all of these initiatives is to help bring the metaverse to life.” So what is Metaverse? And why everyone is talking about it? What is Metaverse?

Metaverse which is a combination of Meta and Universe is a virtual space created by the convergence of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). The Metaverse definition was introduced in the early days of the Internet, mentioned in the novel Snow Crash, published in 1992 by Neil Stephenson.

In Snow Crash, people are represented by Avatar that can interact with each other. The Metaverse in the novel is described as a whole new world that can rewrite social rules and value systems and break free from cultural and economic rigidity.

The metaverse in Snow Crash was later reimagined as “the Oasis” in the novel “Ready Player One” by Ernest Klein. The idea is about a virtual world parallel to the real world outside.

The concept of Metaverse is often used to describe the concept of a future iteration of the Internet, made up of continuous 3D virtual spaces that are interactive, immersive, and collaborative together into a transcendent virtual universe that can be perceivable as a real world. Similar to the physical universe which is a combination of worlds and planets that are connected in space, the metaverse can be thought of as a collection of worlds.

Fortnite, the massive online social game, and user-created virtual worlds like Minecraft and Roblox are some examples of the idea. However, the outstanding advantage of Metaverse compared to current online platforms is that it allows users to generate their own creations and transfer them freely throughout the whole accessible digital universe. For example, you can build your world in Minecraft and move it into “Fortnite”, it sounds great, doesn’t it?

The potential of Metaverse

The metaverse is no longer just a sci-fi term.

“The brands that are progressive in this area are the ones that understand the fact that self-expression is such an important component of why people spend so much time online,” said Christina Wootton, Vice President of brand partnerships at Roblox. “They can be who they want to be.”

During the current covid-19 pandemic, people are spending more time at home and Metaverse has become a temporary exit for terrifying reality. Over the past year, companies and developers in the gaming and tech industries have breathed new life into the Metaverse concept with massively multiplayer games such as Roblox, Fortnite: Battle Royale, and Minecraft.

According to Rev Lebaredian, vice president of simulation technology at NVIDIA, the metaverse will become a platform that’s not tied to any one app or any single place — digital or real. 

Giant companies join Metaverse trends

Metaverse cannot be controlled by any individual or organization, but the usual suspects of the technology world are already showing their interest in Metaverse. Microsoft, Google, Samsung, and Sony have joined Facebook in the XR Association for the purpose of creating the future of “experiential reality”.

By the end of June, Mark Zuckerberg announced his employees at Facebook they’d be working “to help bring the metaverse to life” The entrepreneur has formed a team of its executives to spearhead the project, including Instagram product head Vishal Shah and Facebook Gaming’s Vivek Sharma and Jason Rubin.

In an interview with The Verge, the CEO of Facebook described his ambitions for what the metaverse could be. He mentioned the idea of virtual workspaces, which he called “infinity offices” According to Zuckerberg, working in VR will allow greater multitasking and virtual meeting, also, a metaverse environment can improve collaboration and productivity. He said that he preferred to do meetings in VR if possible instead of Zoom which still has obvious limitations.  

Though VR technology still has a long way to go, according to Facebook’s CEO, it will be ready for metaverse capabilities “by the end of the decade”
